South Coast Foundation's grantmaking program supports South African non-governmental and community-based organizations that address the impact of HIV/AIDS at the local level within impoverished communities. We fund South African organizations only and do not accept proposals from organizations in the United States.
Organizations that believe their programs match our area of support and applicant requirements can send a letter of inquiry. We do not accept unsolicited proposals.
Area of Support
Organizations are sought that provide services within their communities to:
- Orphans, vulnerable or abandoned children (OVC) affected by HIV/AIDS and their caregivers;
- Households headed by children or grandparents resulting from loss of parent(s) from HIV/AIDS;
- Households in which children live with a HIV-positive parent(s).
In addition to matching our area of support, applicants must be registered as a Section 21 company. Their budget, program size or funding shortfall should be able to benefit significantly from a grant within the range of R10 000 to R20 000.
Organizations are considered that meet the following criteria. They are required to:
- Have programs in operation that demonstrate a successful track record.
- Work at the community level to empower community members through their programs.
- Uphold the human rights of children and practice gender equality.
- Use a participatory methodology in the design of their programs.
- Demonstrate a respect for and integration of local culture into the development process.
- Have a history with other funding organizations and an on-going fundraising strategy.
- Maintain financial records and audited financial statements, prepared annually.
- Have the ability to communicate through email. Maintaining a website is a plus.
- Be able to utilize funds to their maximum advantage.
When your organization is invited to submit a proposal, please draft the proposal using the “Proposal Checklist” below as a reference. The proposal can be organized with headings according to the checklist. There is no deadline for submission, however funding is completed in the last four to six months of each year.
The letter should include the date, name and contact details, specific request for program(s) funding and general information about your organization. The person signing the letter will be responsible for signing all documents and submitting reports. State their position within the organization. Please make sure to write the letter on letterhead with the date.
Title page and cover page:
Include the date of application, the name of the program or project, the name of your organization, organization information and contact details, the name and position of the contact person, email address, website address when available, your organization’s physical and postal address and telephone number(s). Make sure to include banking details: State the name of bank and branch, address of bank, name of bank account, account number, SWIFT code.
Statement of Need:
Also called a Problem Statement or Needs Assessment, it is an explanation of the problem(s) your organization addresses, the area where your organization works and the conditions and challenges it faces. Include general information about the issue as well as statistics and data for your area of operation, when possible.
A detailed plan of action that describes the activities of your organization, your program(s) and how they are carried out. Please have a heading for each program with its name. Describe the intended impact, such as number of people receiving your services or benefiting from your program. You may also include your goals, objectives and evaluation plan. If you have timelines or other program tracking information, please include.
The history, structure, purpose and program of your organization, names and positions of executive committee, board of trustees or other leadership, your mission statement and list of current and past donors, past accomplishments.
An itemized budget that details the cost of operating your organization and your program(s) for a minimum of one year.
List your current and past donors, amount of pledges for current year and shortfall amount.
Supplemental information such as your constitution, registration documents, newspaper articles, newsletters, annual reports, financial statements, photographs
If your application is successful, we may use the information you send to feature your organization on our website. Please send photographs and a two to three paragraph description of your organization.
